Welcome : From Interim Head of School Virginia Paik...
At Live Oak, we believe that success in school (and out of school) comes when children embrace opportunities to work through problems with adaptive strategies for learning in those situations. An excellent education teaches children to recognize and relish opportunities for learning, to build relationships in the community that result in new perspectives, and to act with integrity in the ongoing decisions that define their lives.
Early this fall, a student new to our sixth grade said to her mother, "I
feel like I have always been here." She was welcomed and well-known at
Live Oak and this is not by accident: Live Oak’s vision is to know a
child well. Knowing children well is essential to our curriculum that challenges
students to acquire skills and understandings relevant to their individual
development, based on what they already know and what they’ll need to
know next. We develop in students a strong self identity and an understanding
of others’ identities, by creating a community that appreciates difference.
Children who are known well – who know themselves well – feel comfortable
and empowered to participate fully in and out of the classroom, and to engage
in lessons that add knowledge and enrich their lives.
A Live Oak eighth grader recently described his preparation for high school and life beyond. “Live Oak taught us strategies to think about things. You don’t always know what is coming ahead, but you know how to work through the situation.” Our graduates are active participants in and advocates for their lives. They know how to work with others and they have a strong academic foundation that supports the breadth of their potential and promise.
I invite you to browse our website and to visit Live Oak School. You will experience a community brimming with the energy and creativity of learning.
Sincerely,
Virginia Paik
