Live Oak History

Live Oak School was founded in 1971 by a forward-thinking group of parents and teachers who believed that most significant learning occurs through direct interaction with people, places, things and ideas. Originally a K-5 school, Live Oak added a middle school program in 1992.

After ten years in its original location on Ocean Avenue, and a subsequent twenty years on Diamond Street, Live Oak moved to its new site in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood. In addition to providing a library and enhanced facilities for science, technology, art, music and drama, the new building allowed the expansion of the middle school through the addition of a second class in each grade.
