Events + Traditions Many school traditions and events help foster the sense of community that is core to Live Oak's philosophy and curriculum.

Assemblies

Class-led weekly Lower School and Middle School assemblies give students an opportunity to share learning and school news. Parents are always welcome.

Bagels and Chatter

This informal parent gathering, held in the Grand Hall, occurs after drop-off on designated days throughout the school year.

Carnival Bingo

This family event features dinner, many rousing games of bingo (we play until everyone wins), and a toy prize exchange.

Book Fair

The Book Fair invites parents and students to support the Live Oak library collection by purchasing books, both for their own reading and as gifts to the school.

Camp Live Oak

Live Oak’s school year culminates in a three-day outdoor learning experience. For more about camp see School Life > Camp Live Oak

Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) Day

The entire school Drops Everything And Reads for a day. Kids come in their pajamas (the youngest with stuffed animals in tow), and participate in special assemblies and activities focused on reading.

Family Photos

Displayed in the Grand Hall, Live Oak’s annual family portraits keep community in focus.

Family Service Night

This family gathering creates a centralized location for the community to complete service projects that support local organizations. This collaboration recognizes that much can be accomplished by a group of energized volunteers, through a sense of shared effort.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

In May, grandparents and special friends are invited for a daytime school visit and special activities.

Groves

The 22 Live Oak groves comprise small groups of students taken from each grade level. Monthly grove activities include leadership modeling, mentorship exercises, community projects, and service learning.

Halloween

Live Oak celebrates Halloween with gusto. Students come in costume, deliver treats to local businesses, parade around the school and run an after-school haunted house.

Live Oak on Ice

Live Oak students and families gather for a December evening of ice skating and hot chocolate.

Symphony

Students and faculty in Kindergarten through third grades dress up and attend a special educational performance by the San Francisco Symphony.
