Live Oak Shows Up to Serve
Live Oak students, faculty, and staff participated in the annual Week of Service, helping take action throughout the community in various ways.
The week of Martin Luther King Jr. Day marked Live Oak’s annual service learning tradition, Week of Service. Grades kindergarten through eighth grade took part in a range of service activities throughout the week and some that even extended into the following weeks. Changemakers in all grades helped make differences both small and large around campus, the Potrero Hill neighborhood, and the city as a whole.
In addition to formulating and performing a meaningful service project, each grade level also learned about notable changemakers related to their curriculum. For example, third graders visited San Francisco’s Alemany Farm and learned about sustainable farming, eco-friendly stewardship of farming lands, and the various tasks and responsibilities that a farming operation entails, connecting to their learning of historical figures like Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and the United Farmworkers Union.
The week provides an opportunity for our developing changemakers to examine areas in their communities where challenges exist and action can be taken.
Here are just some of the service projects Live Oak students participated during Week of Service:
- Kindergartners helped clean up trash in Jackson Park and designed a new Little Free Library that was installed in front of campus to promote sustainable exchange of books.
- First graders took care of the garden at Jackson Park and made helpful signs for the community users of the garden.
- Second graders led a coat drive for St. Anthony’s, gathering dozens of gently used coats to donate.
- Third graders applied their learning about Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and the United Farmworkers Union to a trip to Alemany Farm.
- Fourth graders learned how to be stewards of “Environmental Justice” at Heron’s Head Park.
- Fifth graders put together “Kid Kits” - bags of fun games and activities - to donate to St. Gregory’s food pantry, intended to provide a positive uplift to children served by the food pantry.
- Sixth graders did a neighborhood clean up, dividing among the streets surrounding the Live Oak campus.
- Seventh graders led a donation drive for Project Homeless Connect, gathering hundreds of toiletry and household items to donate.
- Eighth graders volunteered to package food at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.
Altogether, it was great to see our students, staff, and faculty taking active roles in being leaders and changemakers as they work collectively toward bettering our community!
