Our Community

Alumni

Live Oak students are lifelong learners who love nothing more than a challenge. With their education as foundation, they pursue passions in a breadth of disciplines.

Live Oak graduates are able to take on the responsibility of helping create a just society. They become leaders with the capacity to meet the challenges and opportunities of their generation.

Alumni Changemaker Award

The Live Oak Alumni Changemaker Award is given to an alum who models empathy and responsibility, demonstrates the capacity to create change in the community, and inspires action in others. In 2022, we honored our first Young Alumni Changemaker–a junior or senior in high school–recognizing that Live Oak students do not wait to make an impact in their communities. Most recently, we honored a group of four Young Alumni Changemakers from the Class of 2022 and 2023.

2026 Young Alumni Changemakers

Maya Jayaram '23

Two years ago, Maya was diagnosed with severe scoliosis and prescribed a brace to prevent its progression. To help ensure others receive the same care regardless of financial status, she created a campaign to raise money for Align Scoliosis Foundation which alleviates financial burden for families seeking treatment for scoliosis. Her goal is to help children access essential resources, like a brace, early on to try to prevent worsening pain and the need for major surgery. She continues to share her story to mobilize her community and has raised over $16,000 so far.

Maya also volunteers for Bay Area Tutoring Association which supports the learning and academic success of houseless, at-risk, and justice engaged youth.
Being a student at Live Oak prepared me to be a changemaker because the learning style prompted me to be aware of my environment and ask questions. This helped me develop a strong sense of social responsibility, meaning I observe injustice or unfair treatment and try my best to raise awareness and make a change.

Coleton Namie '23

In 2025, Coleton co-founded Path to Play, a nonprofit that hosts free flag football clinics. He wanted to remove the financial barrier to accessing organized athletics. He and other high school volunteers design and run weekly skill-based clinics for kids aged 10 to 14. Path to Play is building community partnerships with schools in the Bay Area to extend their impact. He intends to share his love of flag football as well as the benefits of building confidence and lessons in teamwork.

Coleton also volunteers for local organizations like the Homeless Prenatal Program and various senior living facilities, playing music for members of the community.
The first thing that Live Oak taught me was to be brave. This project seemed almost impossible to pull off at first, but I remembered the bravery I was surrounded by at Live Oak and decided to go for it. The second thing that Live Oak taught me was to discover my passion and use it to support communities that share that passion and can benefit from that support.

Savion Saint-Prix '22

Savion has been a leader in building equitable and inclusive spaces throughout his time at Lick-Wilmerding High School. Using his experience from the Student Diversity Leadership Conference, he designed and facilitated a teach-in workshop for students and faculty to foster conversations around inclusion, reflection, and honest dialogue to build a more just school community. Additionally, as co-president of the Black Student Union, Savion plans and leads meetings, working to create and sustain a  supportive, inclusive environment for Black students and families.

Savion was featured in a student-led documentary, "From Stigma to Strength," which challenged misconceptions about learning differences. He hosted film screenings and discussions at schools across the Bay Area, speaking with students and educators about ADHD, dysgraphia, dyslexia, and how stigma shapes confidence, accommodations, and access to support.
A Live Oak education prepared me to be a changemaker by providing a safe learning environment where I was encouraged to be myself and view mistakes as part of growth. I learned that my voice mattered and that speaking up was not only allowed but necessary. Through classroom discussions and community spaces, I learned how to engage in difficult conversations with honesty, empathy, and respect.

Jacob Shaul '22

Jacob founded Mode to Code in 2024 to empower the next generation of programmers and innovators. He and his fellow high school volunteers started out offering free courses to elementary and middle school students looking to learn about coding, AI, and video game development. His nonprofit has since expanded to include tech support and lessons for seniors in assisted-living facilities with the goal of bridging the intergenerational gap. Their goal is to teach students of all backgrounds, including those who have been historically underrepresented and under-resourced. Mode to Code currently partners with 30+ different institutions, teaching 1000+ students across 5 continents. They plan to extend their program to Canada, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Bolivia in Fall 2026.

Jacob organized UHS Hacks, University’s inaugural hackathon, as an extension of Mode to Code. He has raised over $16,000 in cash and prizes and made it free for all Bay Area high schoolers to participate.
Live Oak taught me that I could accomplish anything that I set my mind to. They gave me confidence in both myself and my ideas. Live Oak was also integral in the expansion of the program, as they were the first class that Mode to Code worked with. That class showed me what worked and what didn't, shaping how I led all of my future classes and established my curriculum.

Meet All of Our Alumni Changemakers

Alumni Reunions

Each year we welcome back the group of Live Oak alumni who are currently in their senior years of high school. The event offers a chance for the alums to reconnect with one another, visit their favorite locations around campus, and interact with faculty and staff who helped make their experience at Live Oak a memorable one. We always appreciate the opportunity to stay engaged with our alumni and hear their favorite stories and experiences from Live Oak, especially as they are preparing to enter the next phase in their education journeys by heading off to college that fall.

Keep in Touch!

While our alumni may no longer walk the halls of Live Oak (although some still do!), that doesn’t mean that we want to say goodbye. We pride ourselves on creating meaningful connections with our students, and these aren’t relationships that end with graduation.

We are strengthened by alumni participation in life at Live Oak. We love to know what you are up to, celebrate your successes, and offer support to reach your goals. Every year, we host class reunions to reconnect you to the community as you prepare for life after high school. We encourage all of our alumni to come back to visit or volunteer at Live Oak. As our alumni community grows and becomes increasingly active, we look forward to hosting regional gatherings and relying on alumni leadership to create additional opportunities for engagement.

If you are looking to stay up-to-date on the weekly goings on at Live Oak please follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates, photos, and videos.

You can also help us keep up with you by filling out this alumni news & updates form. Live Oak is always looking to highlight alumni work, accomplishments, and life updates in the Live Oak Magazine.

Whether you connect with us on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, or by stopping by our Mariposa campus, we look forward to hearing what you have been up to!
